I came across books by T.C. Lethbridge which discussed dowsing and divination. I was inspired to make my own dowsing rod out of a brazing rod and practised with it in the garden and found that it was able to locate water and hidden metals. One day a friend who lived a few miles away asked me to help him locate a suitable place for him to dig a well in his garden. He was a competent dowser too and had two rods, L-shaped, which he held in each of his hands. He told me that he would try to locate the spot while I remained in the house, then afterwards I would do the same with my V-shaped rod. ...........................

A few years earlier I had read books by Colin Wilson - “The Outsider” and “Religion and the Rebel”, and had become acquainted with the existentialism of Kierkegaarde and Heidegger. He wrote about Arthur Schopenhauer, the philosopher who said "All Truth Passes Through Three stages. First, It Is Ridiculed, Second It Is Violently Opposed, And Third, It Is Accepted As Self-Evident".  Later I was to meet Colin Wilson himself at his home in Gorran Haven in Cornwall and he gave me a copy of his current book of the time, “The Occult”. ..........................................
