The tribal people of the Mountain Province, known by their generic name as the Igorots, live a simple natural life and are deep in wisdom and folklore and still practise their shamanistic rites and healing practices with great efficacy. Their main occupation, apart from the tilling the land, is weaving, and they produce colourful and functional hand-woven cloths which are made up into garments and tablecloths, bags, wall hangings and other items which they sell to travellers and passing tourists. Baguio City was laid out during the early years of the 19^th century by American architects. In 1898 the Americans had defeated the Spanish fleet and had taken over the Philippines following an unbroken period of Spanish rule of more than three hundred years. The Spaniards had brought Christianity, specifically Catholicism, to the country and had introduced Spanish culture and language.

Christianity displaced the religion of the Islamic rulers who had established themselves in the Philippines, apart from the southern island of Mindanao where many Moslems resisted the Spanish rule, sowing the seeds of later dissension. When the Americans arrived they brought missionaries who established schools and taught English to the people of the Mountain Province.....................................................

In 1979 I was invited to a party and met Helen, a lively and sensitive girl who worked at Helston library and we used to take long walks on the Cornish cliffs. She was also interested in poetry and wrote a poem for me which I replied to poetically in a similar vein. She also introduced me to the works of the Chilean poet, Pablo Neruda (not his real name) including the Captain's Verses, from which comes this tantalizing sentiment:

“I want to do with you what Spring does with the cherry trees”
