The Purpose of Life
If it is at all possible to escape this endless cycle, the wheel
of life, then we come to the insight that “who we are” is not thought, but
thought creates the illusion of a separate self. Hermann Hesse, that very
influential writer who won the Nobel prize for Literature in 1947, wrote these
words: “This path is stupid; it goes in circles, perhaps even in spirals, but
whichever way it goes I will follow it.” In his book “Steppenwolf” is a
magic theatre, where the price of admission is your mind.
In my view the purpose of life, if there has to be a purpose, is
to awaken to consciousness, Self-realisation through self-negation, and to find
the way to ourselves, that is, our true being or essence, known as the Self or Atman. At this time also, in the Seventies, I was
reading the works of George Ivanovitch Gurdjieff and P.D. Ouspensky...........................................
